Moving Forward

Putting the humans into the statistics…

This is a small collection of stories gathered from refugee families living in Sydney. It was created for UnitingCare Burnside to support a document evaluating one of their support services. Burnside wanted to include these inspiring stories to help show decision makers why the service is needed and how essential the service continues to be, in this community.

Moya worked with interpreters and crafted the short, emotional pieces from the verbatim transcripts. They were accompanied by photographs from OH visuals master, Dean Golja and published alongside the evaluation data.

We believe that beautiful photography and authentic stories remind decision makers that we are talking about real people and real communities: not just numbers. A good story will engender empathy and understanding and  put the ‘numbers’ into perspective. It brings the humans into the room and creates a different conversation.

Dean’s images invite viewers to empathise with different lives even when there is the challenge of  a de-identified storyteller. (Often for privacy, security or legal reasons, the identity of the storyteller is protected.)
